From lesson 2: Small motorboats
A real lesson step with a worked answer and explanation. In the course, you answer the questions yourself.
What you see
You are looking at the vessel from 0 degrees, where 0 is dead ahead. You see: green light, white light, red light.
Sidelights together on the bow
The sidelights may also be placed right next to each other, or together in one lantern: the bicolour lantern (tweekleurenlantaarn). They are then on the centreline, at or near the bow.
This is only allowed if the masthead light is at least 1 m higher than the sidelights. From ahead you then see the white masthead light high up, with green and red close together below it.
A small motorboat has a bicolour lantern on the bow. It is heading straight towards you. Which lights do you see?
Correct
A bicolour lantern sits on the centreline near the bow, with the masthead light at least 1 m higher. From ahead you therefore see green and red right next to each other below the white masthead light. Separate sidelights are further apart. From the side you see only one colour, and from astern only the sternlight.

You start at lesson 1, Why lights?
Each light shines in one direction only. That is how the masthead, side and stern lights show which way a vessel is heading.
