Lesson 1 Why lights?

See and be seen

At night you often see nothing of a vessel but its lights. Even so, they tell you a lot: which way the vessel is heading, and whether you see it from ahead, from the side or from astern.

That works because each light only shines in a fixed direction. That part of the circle is called the sector.
