On rivers, canals and lakes there are buoys, beacons and lights. They show where the fairway runs, where it splits and where a danger lies. What they look like and what they mean is set out in annex 8 (bijlage 8) of the Binnenvaartpolitiereglement (BPR), the police regulations for Dutch inland waterways.
In lesson 1 you learn what the right-hand and the left-hand side of the fairway are, and what the red and green buoys along those sides look like, by day and at night. After that come bifurcations and harbours, cardinal marks, isolated dangers, safe water and special marks, reading light characters, the lights on the bank, leading lights (lichtenlijnen) and sector lights (sectorlichten).
