About this chapter

Fire, a gas leak or someone falling overboard: in this chapter you learn how to prevent such accidents and what you do if one happens anyway. Fire on board is extra dangerous, because on the water help does not reach you quickly. For an ordinary small boat the law requires little. Most tips in this chapter are therefore advice: not a duty, but sensible.

In lesson 1 you learn how fire starts and how you prevent it. After that come petrol, refuelling and the battery, putting out a fire and what you do when there is one, gas on board and carbon monoxide, and the lifejacket, the lifebuoy and the dan buoy. The last lesson is about falling overboard, a leak and distress: the guardrail, the bilge pump, distress signals, abandoning ship and the radar reflector.
