About this chapter

On the way you come across bridges, weirs and locks. At a movable bridge you sometimes wait until it opens. In a lock you sail into the lock chamber (sluiskolk), often together with other vessels; then the gates close and the water rises or falls until it is as high as on the other side. That is called locking through (schutten). What the lights and boards at bridges and locks mean, you learnt in chapter 6. In this chapter you learn what you do.

In lesson 1 you head for a bridge: a bridge opening as a narrows (engte), a fixed bridge and a weir in short, the waiting area (wachtplaats) and asking for the bridge to be operated. After that come passing through at each light, heading for the lock and sailing in, locking up and down with your lines, and locking through together with large vessels and sailing out again.
