About this chapter
Boating is not only about being under way. You moor, you anchor, and sometimes something goes wrong on the way. In this chapter you learn where you may lie still and where not, even where there is no sign, and how you anchor. After that it is about what you do when someone falls overboard, when you tow or are towed, when you run aground and after a collision.
In lesson 1 you learn what lying still means and at which places you do not take a berth. After that come mooring and lying alongside, two lessons on anchoring, man overboard, and finally towing, running aground and the duty to assist.

What lying still means, why you moor securely, and where you take no berth: under a bridge, in a narrows, where a harbour joins the waterway, in the route of a ferry or to a landing stage, and at a no-berthing sign.
What you moor to, the signs for mooring, how much distance you keep from a vessel with blue cones, and what you allow and do when boats lie alongside each other.
Where you may anchor, why you anchor off a weather shore in wind, what chain and line do and how much line you let out, the signals at anchor, and the anchor when you break down.
How you lower and set the anchor, how you notice that it drags and what you do then, how wind and current swing your boat round the anchor, and how you weigh anchor again, with anchor buoy and tripping line.
What you do first when someone falls overboard, when you raise the alarm, how you motor back and stop with the propeller stopped, and how you get the person in the water on board.
What a tow and a side-by-side formation are, when you may come alongside, how you tow a boat that steers badly, what you must and can do when you run aground, and when you help after a collision and which details you give.
