About this chapter
With a sound signal (geluidssein) a vessel lets others hear what it is going to do or what it needs: a short blast, a long blast, or a series of them. You tell what a signal means from the series of blasts and from the situation. The BPR say which signals a small vessel must give when needed, which it may give and which it may not. Then there is the VHF radio (marifoon), with which vessels talk to each other and to bridges, locks and traffic posts.
In lesson 1 you learn how long a short and a long blast last, what you give a signal with, who may give which signal, and the first signals: attention, altering course to starboard, altering course to port, going astern, the signal for a bridge or lock and the signal before a narrows. After that come danger and distress, the signals of large vessels, and two lessons on the VHF radio: when you must have one and how you use it on the way.

How long a short and a long blast last, what you give a signal with, which signals a small vessel must, may or may not give, attention, starboard, port and astern, the signal for a bridge or lock, and the long blast before a narrows.
Unable to manoeuvre, danger of collision, the distress signal in sound, light and flag, medical help, the keep-away signal and what you do then, and the difference between one signal and again and again.
Signals a small vessel does not give but does recognise: turning round, leaving a harbour or side channel, overtaking, the blue board, and how the signals are built up.
When a small vessel must have a VHF radio (marifoon), keeping a listening watch (uitluisteren) if you have one, channel 10 and the block channel, annex 9, the language when you cannot understand each other, and the certificate and registration.
Where you keep a listening watch (uitluisteren): open water, block area, bridge, lock and poor visibility; the white and the blue VHF sign; radar and VHF radio (marifoon) together; navigation channel and information channel, and where you find the channel.
